What difficulties did you encounter in the first stage? ÜSKÜDAR
For the 9 years and 2 months since the beginning of the project until 29.10.2013 STATION
when the commercial trains started to operate, archaeological excavations
consumed a great amount of time. Excavation works of the North Entrance of
Sirkeci Station has been the longest one, and lasted for 7 years.
How did you overcome the effects of the project being in an area of many
historical remains?
Construction works were commenced quite late due to the significant amount
of time consumed by archaeological excavations. During the archaeological
works, interruptions were experienced in construction works which caused
inefficiencies. However the activities were well-planned and later on the labour
force and equipments were increased in order to reach Project targets.
Could you provide some detailed information as to the activities of Nurol
in the project?
The following activities have been completed by the Joint Venture where Nurol
is a partner under the scope of Marmaray BC1 Project:
1) As for TBM and NATM tunnels; the TBM tunnel between Yedikule and
Yenikapı, plus the Yenikapı turn back tunnel drilled with NATM method,
2) At-grade construction works and line works of Kazlıçeşme - Yedikule and
Ayrılıkçeşme,
3) Kazlıçeşme Station, Yenikapı Station, North and South Entrance Structures
of Sirkeci Station, Üsküdar Station,
4) Yedikule, Yenikapı and Ayrılıkçeşme Ventilation Structures,
5) Ayrılıkçeşme Road and Junction Arrangement Works Apart from these,
two steel bridges design, manufacturing and site installations of which were
completed by NUROL STEEL have also been in the scope of our Project. What does this project mean for Turkey?
Marmaray BC1 Project is a part of the “Gebze-Haydarpaşa,
Sirkeci-Halkalı Commuter Railway Improvement and
Railway Bosphorus Tube Crossing Construction (Marmaray)”
and connects European and Asian sides of Istanbul by
railway under the Bosporus. The most important feature
of the project in terms of public interest is its design that
allows heavy freight transportation as well as the operation
of high-speed trains.
Did you encounter any unexpected major problems during
construction? Could you please tell us about these?
The most important problem we encountered apart from
archaeological excavations was the interruptions that
occurred during Yedikule-Yenikapı TBM tunnel excavations.
We experienced 5 excavation interruptions in total which
were subject to claims from the employer. The time we lost
during these interruptions was compensated by additional
acceleration measures. We excavated with a maximum daily
speed of 31.5 meters.
Has there been any structures, systems etc in the project,
which were used for the first time in Turkey? If so, what
were these?
Passive fire protection (PFP) system was implemented in a
subway project for the first time in Marmaray BC1 Project.
A fire protection coat was sprayed in the tunnels and stations of
the project as well as the railway levels of ventilation buildings,
in order to prevent sudden cave-ins of the structure in the event
of a fire.
