AGENDA
nder the scope of the Project which
started in 2004, a 13.6 km long railway
Bosphorus tube crossing, tunnels and
stations between Ayrılıkçeşme and
UKazlıçeşme were constructed by a joint
venture of Japanese TAISEI and Turkish GAMA
- NUROL companies. The project comprises of
Ayrılıkçeşme, Üsküdar, Sirkeci, Yenikapı and
Kazlıçeşme Stations successively. Among these,
Üsküdar Station is 280 meters long, 32 meters
wide and 30 meters below the sea level. Life time
of the project is ensured to be over 100 years with
the use of a special structural concrete that is
water resistant and frost resistant. Tube tunnels
were manufactured on a site established in Tuzla
and were specially transported to Bosphorus to
be immersed. 1400 meters long immersed tube
allowing the passage of the Bosporus is consisted
of 11 pieces of concrete elements and it is designed
in such a way that can resist against 3 meters per
second current velocity in 60 meters depth. First
tube was immersed on 24 March 2007 and then 11
tubes were respectively immersed.
Last tube was immersed on 28 September 2008
and Asia and Europe were united also below the sea
with this historical project. The 1400-meter long
immersed tube crossing the Bosphorus consists Ahmet ARSLAN, M. Oğuz ÇARMIKLI, Metin TAHAN, Takashi YAMAUCHI, Erol ÜÇER, Binali YILDIRIM, Satoru OGATA, Hidem OHMI, Nobuaki TANAKA, Bülent ERDOĞAN
of 11 reinforced concrete elements, and is the
deepest immersed tube tunnel in the world with
its impressive depth of 60 meters. The tubes were
placed with millimetric precision despite the 3m/sec
North-south current above the Bosphorus and 1m/ Travel time that is currently 185 minutes will be decreased to 100 minutes by
sec reverse current down below during the immersion this project with a capacity to carry 150 thousand people per hour along the
of the tubes. The first tube was immersed on March route. All the precautionary measures were taken during the construction works
24, 2007 followed by the remaining 10 tubes and the of Marmaray to preserve the city’s cultural heritage.
immersion was completed on September 28, 2008.
TBM tunnels from Ayrılıkçeşme and Yenikapı were Works were carried out meticulously in coordination with all the involved parties
adjoined to the tunnels immersed in the middle such as the Ministry of Culture, Preservation Boards, Istanbul Archaeology
