Churches and religious texts, Old Georgian continued to be
used. The Georgian alphabet is one of the oldest writings
in the world and Georgian is a language with a rich sound
system. Today this alphabet is also used in the writing of Laz,
Mingrelian language and Svan.
Georgians are one of the oldest Christian communities in the
world. According to traditional belief, Georgian fully adopted
Christianity by being influenced from the sermons of a
Cappadocian ave named Nino in the early 4th century. The
Georgian church played an important role in the development
of art, architecture and literature. However, the church
buildings su§ered great damage in both the Tsarist and
the Soviet era. After the Soviet Union’s disintegration and
Georgia’s independence, the influence of the church increased
again. With the majority of the people being Orthodox, there
is no oªcial religion of Georgia today. The second largest
majority is Muslim Georgians.
Turkey is one of the first countries recognized the independence
of Georgia on 16th of December 1991, after the dissolution of
the Soviet Union. The formal Protocol on the establishment
of diplomatic relations between two countries was signed on
21st of May 1992. Turkey borders Adjara to the south.
During the last decades the relationship between Georgia and
Turkey has a strategic character demonstrating successful
achievements in political, economic and cultural fields.
