An exhibition with pastel paintings by artist
Hakan Derya Ömürlüoğlu entitled ‘Karabaş,
Çomar and the others...’ became our first
activity. His photographs of stray dogs
taken in the Bodrum shelters had actually
been the source of inspiration for our project
and served as templates for the paintings.
The exhibition was on show at the Bodrum
Nurol Art Gallery from 7-28 February and
attracted great attention with the Bodrum
animal lovers. The exhibition featured both
the pastel paintings and the stories of
the stray dogs from Torba and Turgutreis
shelters and Yalıkavak animal home. A dog
food company and a pet shop supported
our project by setting up stands where food
for the stray dogs was distributed. These
companies and some hotels donated dog
food and cleaning material. Students of
schools that we had asked to contribute
essays about the love of animals attended
the opening representing their schools. The
adoption of a puppy that one of our visitors
had seen on a shelter photograph was a
perfect example of the awareness that we
had aimed to create.
A MEANINGFUL In the second phase of our project, in March,
the exhibition ‘Karabaş, Çomar and the
others...’ went on a journey to shopping
EXHIBITION centres in Ankara, İstanbul, Eskişehir and
Kayseri. As most of the original paintings
had been sold already, reproductions were
on display. A few reproductions were left in
the end, which were donated to the İstanbul

his year in February Oasis Shopping Culture and
Entertainment Center brought up a new project in favour
Tof the dogs maintaining their life in the Bodrum municipal
shelters where they are fed and looked after. With the slogan
“Shelters are not the solution! YOU are their home...”, we aimed
to draw attention to shelters and street dogs.
