Sheraton Ankara Hotel & Covnetion Center started a journey with
their motto: “Art will continue to be visible in Sheraton Ankara and
Sheraton Ankara will continue to exist through the power of art.”
The hotel organized a night for the honor of Mehmet Güleryüz, one
of Turkey’s greates artists, and his renowned artwork `Karşı Rüzgar
- The Counterwind’ on Thursday, 11 January 2018.
With this occasion, together with guests from Istanbul and Ankara,
The Counterwind series were freshen in the memories since it
still is one of the biggest art projects with 14 paintings which
was created between September 1990 and February 1992. The
series were originally ordered for Sheraton Ankara’s Foyer and has
been exhibited since then. Güleryüz’s `The Counterwind’ series
is compsed of 10 paintings of 350x325 cm and four of 350x70 cm
dimensions.
Below is quoted from the book written by famous author and art
historian Nan Freeman, published in 1998 for the first time to use
for the exhibition held at Ankara Gallery Nev with the occasion of
the 30th year of artistic career of Mehmet Güleryüz and republished
enlarging during the 50th retrospective exhibition realized in 2008.
Güleryüz moved into the 1990’s as a major personality in Turkish
contemporary art, and a powerful senior practtioner in painting,
he launched into his most imposing cycles of work. In 1991 he was
commissioned for paintings by the Sheraton Ankara, a suite of
fourteen very large canvases to be installed as a fiexd group, facing
each other around the walls of a large glass-domed atrium.
Güleryüz says of his Sheraton commission “it was the greatest
opportunity ever presented to me... the biggest painting project
ever done in Turkey... never attempted before, it would be diªcult
to realize again.” Güleryüz worked a year on the mural cycle.
These great works show the painter at mid-career expanding
his powers of pictorial conceptualization, design, rendering,
and sustained aesthetic resolution into a whole new scope, and
