A dream comes true in İstanbul. Within the scope of Marmaray Tube Tunnel Construction, in January, people shall walk under the Bosporus and go across for the first time. Marmaray Project Deputy Director Senior Civil Engineer Hüseyin BELKAYA expressed that this was a 150 years- dream. According to the information provided by BELKAYA; the dream for crossing the Bosporus underground was first brought into agenda in 1360 during Sultan Abdülmecid term. Sultan Abdülmecid requested Engineer Preault to submit as project. Engineer Preault designed an underground tunnel between Sarayburnu and Üsküdar. But this tunnel could not be accomplished under that technology. In 1902, engineers Strom, Lindman and Hilliker designed a new Bosporus Crossing project.
BELKAYA said; “In his project, engineers thought a viaduct under the sea and they again planned their route between Sarayburnu and Üsküdar. However this project was not accomplished as well. Finally, in 2010 we are about crossing İstanbul Bosporus under the sea. Although upon a delay of 150 years we are tracing the footsteps of our ancestors”.
