Trains traveling from Sirkeci Station to Yenikapi using Marmaray, the under-water crossing tube connecting Asia and Europe, will cross the 3,300 meter long line in three and a half minutes. The traveling which will also run through underneath of some historical monuments will take place at different depths sometimes going as deep as 6,083 meters. Hocapaşa Mosque, Ebussuud Street, Mercan Mosque, İstanbul Prep School, Beyazıt Public Library, Beyazıt Streetcar Line, Laleli, the Russian Bazaar in Aksaray are among the historical monuments are all situated on the surface over the tunnel starting out in Yenikapı on the European Side. The tunnel runs very close to the Covered Bazaar – a mere 150 meters. We go real deep so that we would not cause any damage to the environment.. All the works, including the construction of suburban lines of the Marmaray Project, were expected to be completed in 2009. But, due to archeological diggings, the new date for the completion of Marmaray has been set as 2013. In total, it will cost 3 billion dollars. Prime Minister Tayyip Erdoğan laid the foundation at Marmaray where 3 billion dollars will be spent. 860 milllion dollars of this amount will be used for the tube crossing system. Until now, 500 million dollars have been spent.
