KUp until recently, the Turkish defense industry was heavily dependent on foreign sources to meet a big chunk of its needs. But, now the trend has been reversed and the Turkish defense industry has started relying on domestic suppliers for the most part of its needs. A new era stressing domestic production for defense is being strongly felt. A few years back, Turkish defense industry was able to meet only a quarter of its needs domestically. Today, Turkey meets 44.2% of its defense needs through local suppliers and manufacturers. This percentage is targeted to be raised to 50% by the end of 2010. According to a report by the Undersecretariat of Defense Industry, Turkish defense industry has displayed a remarkable progress, especially since 2004 after the trend reversed in favor of domestic production.. Total turnover at the defense sector in 2008 reached USD2,317 billions –a 15% increase compared with the previous year. Also, export figures for defense and aviation industries reached USD783,9 millions. In the report indicating that Turkey will be able to meet half of its defense needs by the end of 2010, it has also been noted that the total volume of products and services will reach one billion dollars in 2011. Works by Aselsan, TAITUSAS, Havelsan, Roketsan, BMC, Otokar, and FNSS are among some of the projects which have been a source of pride for all of us in recent years.
