The excavations conducted for the transportation and preservation of historical artefacts within the Hasankeyf district of Batman – which risk being submerged with the entry into service of the Ilısu Dam and Hydroelectric Power Plant project – have led to the uncovering of Ayyubid Sultan Suleiman Khan’s tomb. Şeyhmus Genç, the Director of the Batman Museum, said that works are being conducted with great diligence to carry historical artefacts from the site that would otherwise be submerged into the Hasankeyf Cultural Park. Reminding that the minaret of the Suleiman Han Mosque, known to have been built by Sultan Suleiman Khan in 1407, has already been transferred, Genç said, “Once the restoration works are completed, [the minaret] will be showcased in the section of the Hasankeyf Museum that is opened for display.”
