The construction works of the bridge constituting the prominent part of the Gebze-Orhangazi-İzmir Highway Project, which will shorten the travel time from 9 to 3,5 hours between İstanbul and İzmir, are in progress. A bridge floor has been placed by the help of a floating crane on the north tower of the bridge, which will decrease the transition time of the Gulf to 6 minutes. It is stated that this was the first bridge floor placed between two towers. In the project which will give İzmit Gulf a new silhouette by means of the towers, provides employment to 1500 workmen including 650 welders. The bridge also called as ‘the necklace of İzmit Gulf’ is expected to be brought into service in April. It is foreseen that 8-10 hour travel time will decrease to 3- 3,5 hours and 650 million dollar saving would be provided in terms of feasibility studies on the advantages of the highway shortening the distance 95 km. compared to the current state road. While transition time over the Gulf is 1 hour 20 minutes by car, 45-60 minutes by ferry, it will be just 6 minutes with the utilization of the bridge.
