A recent trend is to have chess pieces designed to symbolize the architectural and monumental structures of the world’s leading cities, and as Turkey’s capital, Ankara has also joined the ranks of cities with their own custom chess pieces. Serial production has been launched in the “Ankara-Themed Chess Set” project, which is being conducted under the Support Program for the Commercialization of Domestic Products. The pieces making up the Ankara Chess Set are representations of structures from different eras and periods in the history of the capital. As such, the Pawns are Hittite Sun Disks, the Rooks are Ankara Castle, the Knights are the Kocatepe Mosque, the Bishops are Atatürk’s Mausoleum, the Queen is the Ankara Sheraton Hotel, and the King is Atakule. Abdullah Togay, Merve Coşkun, Ebru Gedik and M. Ferit Aydın, who designed the pieces, said that when designing the chess set, their goal was to reflect the architectural history and cultural heritage of Ankara.
